Build day number 1

This is build day number one of my brand new much bigger aquaponic system. I went to lowes and got some PVC pipe to make my grow bed stand. I am going to use my existing beds in my garage system for the new system. They are just concrete mixing tubs you can get also at lowes. Last weekend I purchased a 100 gallon stock tank from tractor supply in Deland. I am going to put goldfish in the system to provide the nutrients for the plants. I will put together a supply list and post an update later today.

Supply list
3- 10 foot sections of 1 1/2 inch pipe
4-25 inch legs
4 – 10 inch side
4 28 3/4 inch sides. Need to verify this measurement

8 - 90 degree street slip
8 - 45 degree y
8 - 90 degree regular

Aquaponics update Basil

Since my last update I have removed the tomato and pepper plants and have planted basil which has taken off.  It has been a lot of fun to grow. I think next  I am going to try and grow some lettuce next and see how that does.

I finally have a ripe tomato on my tomato plant. Going to pick it probably tonight. My plant has some sort of deficiency so I will probably pull it and plant something else.

Update of my aquaponics system

My aquaponics system is doing great.  The tomato plant is growing like crazy I can hardly keep up with moving the lights up.  The pepper plants are also growing really well. My basil is coming up and the lettuce isn't doing as well as I thought it would.  Over all enjoying the system.

Quick update on the growth of the plants

I havent posted a update of my aquaponics in a while.  Life has been pretty busy but thought I  would record an update of my plant growth. The plants are doing really well. I had to pull out the lettus it is just to hot for it right now to do well.  My tomato plants and my pepper plants are getting really big. I threw some basil seeds in there and they are starting to come up.  I am really liking the system.

Fish death in the aquaponic system

Yesterday had a fish death so I got concerned about the water levels in the system.  I did an ammonia test and a ph test and both were high. Now I Need to do some additional reading on how to establish the biological filter in the grow beds. Until then I have placed a regular filter on the system to clear up the water .

Plants in the system.

I finally got some plants for my aquaponic system. I planted red and green bell peppers, patio tomato plants and broadcasted some lettuce seeds into the beds.

The lettuce seeds have finally sprouted!!!!

Aquaponic Overflow Tank

Tonight I decided to build an overflow tank for my aquaponic system. The overflow tank is used to keep the aquarium at a constant height. If the electric goes out the water will overflow from the aquarium to the overflow tank. If for what ever reason the overflow loses its prime I have connected a water jet to the primer hose to suck the air out of the overflow and re prime the overflow

First aquaponic system

For my first aquaponic system I decided to create a system in my garage utilizing a 40 gallon aquarium
and 2 grow beds. It is a ebb flow system that takes the water containing the fish wastes up to the grow beds and In turn the plants clean the water and is returned to the tank. In the upcoming weeks I will be making an over flow tank in order to keep a constant height in my aquarium.
